The Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve: protecting our wildlife – one takeaway cup at a time.
There are plenty of reasons to go green: lower utility bills, reduction in greenhouse gases, slowing down global warming, making this planet liveable for future generations. Whatever the reason, the important thing is effecting change and taking action. This is exactly what the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve in the Cradle of Humankind has been doing. Their aim? To help create a sustainable earth so they can ensure a cleaner and brighter future.

“Going green” is not a new concept. But despite all the talk, it’s surprisingly difficult to find suppliers that support the idea. Luckily, that didn’t stop the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve. In March 2018, they began making use of Enviromall’s green catering products.
We’re not just talking about substituting plastic straws for paper. They have gone a step further and replaced all of their takeaway packaging with biodegradable alternatives – quite a feat for a venue that boasts five fully-stocked restaurants.

The first alternative material the RHINO AND LION NATURE RESERVE went with was bagasse. Bagasse is a tough, yet sustainable product created from the by-products of sugar cane processing. Bagasse fibre-board products are sturdy, functional and best of all – they’re compostable. The RHINO AND LION NATURE RESERVE has started using Bagasse products in place of conventional paper plates and polystyrene takeaway boxes.

The second alternative they agreed upon was Polylactic Acid (PLA). PLA is derived from corn starch resin and is light, durable and completely renewable. The RHINO AND LION NATURE RESERVE has replaced all of their cups, lid and takeaway cutlery with this versatile medium.

While product substitution may seem like a small step, it is certainly a step in the right direction. The Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve strives to educate, conserve and protect. One cannot be expected to effectively protect our wildlife without also protecting our environment. And this is exactly what the RHINO AND LION NATURE RESERVE is determined to do – one takeaway cup at a time.
